The man who would become Quill was named Danic, born to a peasant family in Kor Chercen, Akkoria. Danic had a younger sister, Lina, and brother, Ander. When their father Doriel died, Danic had to take on his responsibilities, keeping the farm running. Their mother Mirayne (“meer-AYNE”) fell to illness a few years after Doriel’s death, leaving the teen children to fend for themselves. They continued to run the farm as best they could, but soon they fell prey to a band of Myerean bandits who captured them and sold them into slavery in Nost’ Karé.
Danic has not seen his brother and sister since they were sold to different masters.
In September 509, Quill accompanied Sir Reginald Farnsworth III into Halgudar on a mission to discover why the supply trains had been disrupted. Once beyond the old Dakkorian borderlands, they encountered Rynith forces. Quill posed as a slave to the Keystone in order to escape questioning, but the Court Mage [Heather Brodt] held a private audience with Keystone nonetheless. When Quill later asked about the events of that meeting, Keystone told him that she asked circular questions and spoke in a way that did not yield much information to him. He also noted that she bore a vessel on her belt that, for some reason, he felt Quill should attempt to obtain…and that it should go only to Quill. Later the company would encounter a magikal being composed entirely of darkness, which seemed to devour magikal power with a touch. Quill spotted the creature withdrawing in a mist-like shape into the Court Mage's vessel, and deduced that the creature was much like a djinn, but one which destroyed magik rather than being composed of one... Quill plotted to obtain the vessel in combat, but he did not encounter the Court Mage again.
Quill tried to serve Sir Reginald in the capacity he had been hired - as a healer - while guarding himself first. Though apolitical, he found himself drawn into the tragic saga of Halgudar, brought to pity by the countless grave-marking torches he saw. His involvement in the fate of Halgudar grew as Sir Reginald’s company discovered messages meant for the legendary Halgudari heroine Vy [Coffee Polk], detailing a ritual which would cleanse the land of the vile forces that threatened it - in this case, a terrible Death Lord and the Lich that was bound to him.
In the end, Quill participated in Vy’s ritual, which brought forth the spirit of General Robert Cymfal and formally dissolved the Halgudari claim to the land. When asked, he told Cymfal’s spirit that he fought for Halgudar because he knew what it was to lose one’s family, and that he believed a man’s destiny should be his own, not enslaved to another. He meant what he said, but in that moment, as he gazed into the darkness of Cymfal’s spectral helm, Quill realized the contradiction that his life had come to center around. Though valuing his own freedom and that of others, he summons the Servants of the Cards to do his will.
This revelation was further clarified as the Dragon Marclyx [Mike Antos] appeared before Vy and the company in human form. Marclyx answered questions posed to him by those present. Quill, not knowing of Marclyx’s true nature but recognizing his power (and attempting to decipher the Wolfshead‘s comment that he “smelled like lizard“), asked first if Marclyx knew where his brother and sister were. Marclyx replied, “I do not track the movements of individual men.” Daring to ask a second question, Quill said, “Do you know where can be found more of the Cards of Zul’Amun?” Marclyx said that he was hesitant to answer, as he saw darkness behind Quill’s motives for seeking the cards - a desire for revenge. Quill defensively claimed that he sought the power of the Cards in order to find and protect his family, but in his heart, he sensed truth in Marclyx’s charge, and resented it. Whatever Marclyx’s assessment of Quill’s words, he told him that there were two Cards in Rynith. Quill, intimidated by the Dragon’s presence, dared not ask for further specificity and instead made a hasty departure.
As the company broke camp and prepared to return to Kura’Stan in Quivera, Quill consulted with his Servants. Pride urged him to loot Rynith corpses, taking tabards from them in order to infiltrate Rynith. Quill agreed with the plan, though Keystone convinced him that returning to the city in order to collect payment from Sir Reginald and perform further research on the Cards - with Rynith as a focal point - might be prudent. Quill decided that, once they reached Kura’Stan, they would charter a ship to Akkoria, and thence onward to Rynith.
Danic has not seen his brother and sister since they were sold to different masters.
